90 Million Working-Age Americans Out of Labor Market, Gang of Eight Wants 1 Million New Visas

Published on April 5th, 2013

March’s economic news is horrible. Despite mainstream media stories that the unemployment rate dropped to 7.6 percent, the truth behind the raw statistics is frightening. Last month, only 88,000 jobs were created.

The details behind the Bureau of Labor Statistics report are more chilling than the paltry number of new jobs. According to the respected Internet financial analysis site Zerohedge.com, last month people not in the labor force soared by 660,000 to a record 90 million Americans who aren’t even looking for work. The labor force participation rate plunged from an already abysmal 63.5 percent to 63.3 percent, the lowest level since 1979. Faced with deciding to work at minimum wage jobs or stay home and collect benefit checks, Americans are opting for the latter. See charts and related information on the Zerohedge website here.

The White House, however, views the data differently. In its blog, Cabinet member and Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers wrote: “Today’s employment report provides further evidence that the U.S. economy is continuing to recover from the worst downturn since the Great Depression.”

With so many Americans hurting, extracting positives from the BLS report is hard. But with the economy in such dire straits and 90 million Americans not in the labor force this could and should provide a death blow to the amnesty legislation the Senate is expected to introduce next week.

As the Senate bill’s details leek out, devastation to American workers would be worse than anyone could have anticipated. Sources close to the negotiations have said that as many as 1 million additional foreign workers would be allowed to compete for U.S. jobs, 350,000 of them middle-class skilled positions. Last year, the federal government issued a staggering 700,000 non-immigrant visas.  [Immigration Bill Would Import 1 Million Workers per Year, Neil Munro, Daily Caller, April 5, 2013]

Not only would unemployed Americans bear the brunt of the proposed amnesty, taxpayers would take a heavy hit, too. The April 5 CAPS’ homepage story included an analysis made by the Senate Budget Committee’s Republican staff which found that a “major flaw” in the Gang of Eight’s immigration reform plan could  result in a multi-trillion dollar entitlement for amnestied aliens.
