Slowing Immigration Not Racist, Just ‘Common Sense’

Since 2000, record high immigration has displaced American workers.

Today, the last day of the Republican convention, CNN will air an ad from Californians for Population Stabilization that features civil rights leader and former Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Executive Director Frank Morris. The message Morris delivers to the White House and Congress is that slowing historically high immigration to the United States and reducing the flow of immigrant labor isn’t racist, as so many critics charge, but common sense.

Less immigration means more job openings for Americans, vitally important since 92 million Americans are detached from the labor force. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services issues each legal immigrant an employment authorization document that allows him to compete with Americans for increasingly scarce jobs. For Congress, less immigration should be a priority. Research from the Center for Immigration Studies based on Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor statistics found that since 2000 all of the net gain in the number of working-age (16 to 65) people holding a job has gone to legal and illegal immigrants even though native-born Americans accounted for two-thirds of the working-age population’s growth during the period.

America’s blacks and Hispanics suffer disproportionately from excessive immigration. Black unemployment is twice as high as it is for whites. For Latinos, the employment picture is equally bleak: 14 million are not in the labor market. As one African-American said at a Miami job fair, reflecting the sentiments of millions of unemployed, “any type job” that pays would suit him.
