CAPS Position on Health Care Coverage

Published on July 4th, 2015

CAPS firmly believes that working Americans are entitled to health insurance coverage for contraception.  While we support everyone's right to their own beliefs, we do not believe that employers should be able to deprive their employees of health care coverage for birth control.

Under the Affordable Care Act, employers above a certain size are required to provide employees with health insurance coverage. Normally, this is done by providing employees with access to a group health insurance plan offered by a third party (e.g., Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, etc.). Most employers do this already. Each individual employee can then decide whether or not to obtain insurance-covered contraception through this third party insurer. We see no problem with this approach. The working people of America should be able to decide for themselves if they will use their health insurance for family planning.
