A new TV commercial hit the airwaves today pushing the government to cut down on legal immigration. 23 ABC’s Christine Dinh has the details on this hot button issue, and why the group behind the ad is targeting Bakersfield.

"Now that so many Californians are out of work, attention is turning to the millions of illegal workers in the state. It’s about time. But what about these workers, legal foreign workers?" That’s the focus of this TV ad campaign by the Californians for Population Stabiliazation.

In the ad, the nonprofit organization calls for a slowdown in legal immigration and temporary workers until Californians are working again. "They take good jobs in places like California, no matter how many Californians are out of work, or how ill the economy gets."

The organization claims the US brings in more than a million legal workers and temporary workers each year, thereby taking away jobs from Americans. "Most people erroneously believe that Americans won’t do these jobs. That’s wrong. That’s a myth."

The TV ad started airing today specifically in Bakersfield and will go for another four months. But why Bakersfield? "Well, it’s because of this high rate of unemployment. Bakersfield is among the highest counties in California."

The organizations’ website also takes aim at Congressman Kevin McCarthy saying quote "It’s time for Congressman Kevin McCarthy to stand up for Bakersfield workers." Kevin McCarthy is very soft on immigration.
