Major Achievement: House Votes to Defund Obama’s Executive Actions

Published on January 14th, 2015

Today, the House of Representatives took a major step forward to block President Obama’s executive action that will grant up to 5 million illegal immigrants temporary legal status, work permits and Social Security numbers.

Finally! House votes to defund Obama’s amnesties.

The House approved two amendments to the Department of Homeland Security spending bill to defund Obama’s unconstitutional executive amnesties. The Aderholt amendment, which would block funding for Obama’s November executive actions and former ICE director John Morton’s prosecutorial discretion memos, passed 237 to 190. Also, the Blackburn amendment to block further funding for Obama’s 2012 deferred action for childhood arrivals passed 218 to 209. Robert Aderholt represents Alabama’s 4th District; Marsha Blackburn, Tennessee’s 7th District.

Two California representatives, Jeff Denham and David Valadao, joined with Democrats to oppose the amendments. The House passed the full DHS bill, 236 to 191.

The victories, which would also bar illegal immigrants covered in Obama’s November action from receiving federal benefits, are only the first step. The Senate and a probable presidential veto are imposing obstacles to total success. Nevertheless, the House has taken a refreshingly pro-active, anti-amnesty stance.

In his statement to the press, Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) called the House vote “one of the most important constitutional votes ever to come before this body.” Sessions encouraged every Senate Democrat to consider to whom he owes his allegiance: party leaders, donors and foreign nationals or American citizens and the Constitution.
