Poll Reveals Americans Increasingly Dissatisfied Over Immigration Levels
Published on February 14th, 2023
A new Gallup poll reveals that Americans are increasingly dissatisfied with American immigration levels and desire less immigration overall.
Gallup released the results in a post on their website on February 13, 2023, which revealed some interesting insights into American attitudes on this topic.
Americans satisfied with current immigration levels fell six points to 28%, when compared with responses from the previous year.
According to Gallup, this is their lowest satisfaction rate in a decade on this issue. For context, obviously some people polled are dissatisfied because they think current immigration levels are not high enough.
That’s why the next stat is key, because the percentage dissatisfied because they want less immigration rose to 40% overall. A further breakdown from Gallup mentioned the dissatisfied group who want less immigration has significantly increased over the past two years (19% in 2021, and 35% in 2022).
When broken down among party lines, there were some notable trends. Republicans dissatisfied with immigration levels who want less immigration rose to 71% from 69% the previous year, and 40% in 2021.
Among Democrats, only 19% are dissatisfied and want less immigration. Once again, context is key because in 2021 only 2% of Democrats fell into this category, and last year it was only 11%.
According to Gallup, it is the lowest rated issue with which Republicans are satisfied, while for Democrats it falls more in the middle. Gallup also noted that 36% of independents are dissatisfied and want less immigration, which is an increase from 19% just two years ago.
Whatever way you want to cut it, more and more Americans across the board are dissatisfied with immigration levels and desire less immigration.
The poll was conducted between January 2-22 of this year as part of their annual Mood of the Nation Survey.
The increase in dissatisfaction over immigration should not be surprising given the state of our border. In 2022, we saw ten straight months with over 200,000 southern border encounters.
Since Biden’s inauguration in 2021, there have been 1.2 million gotaways as a result of illegal immigration. In fiscal year 2022, there were 2.2 million border encounters.
It seems the American public have taken notice of the catastrophe at our border and the rampant levels of immigration into the country. It will be interesting to see how the political class reacts in the coming year given the attitudes of their constituents across party lines over this issue.
