President Obama is fond of saying that his executive immigration action isn’t amnesty. Other supporters insist that since Obama’s unilateral action doesn’t include a path to citizenship, it clearly can’t be categorized as amnesty.
|Disneyland: Tourists or future employees?|
Most of the recipients of Obama’s executive action don’t care about citizenship. Nearly two-thirds of Mexicans living in the U.S. who qualify for citizenship have not applied. But work permits are something they do care about. Mexicans represent the largest percentage of the total U.S. alien population, about 67 percent, who will be officially protected from deportation and be rewarded with work permits, Social Security numbers and welfare entitlements. Unofficially, illegal immigrants know their likelihood of deportation is microscopically slim.
Obama’s unconstitutional edict will give work authorization to 5 million aliens. As outrageous as that is, the Center for Immigration Studies learned that Obama has been busily handing out work permits to unlawful immigrants for the last five years. To be exact, an additional 5.5 million work permits have been issued to unlawful immigrants since 2009. While at this point nothing that Obama does about immigration that disregards Congress can be called shocking, the CIS report comes close.
According to information CIS obtained from U.S. Customs and Immigration Services through a Freedom of Information request, the 5.5 million employment authorization documents break out this way:
- Approximately 1.8 million were given to aliens with temporary permission to enter, including tourist and business visas, or those who arrived under the visa waiver program. Of these, about 1.2 million (67 percent) had a visa status for which employment is not authorized by law, such as foreign-born students.
- About 982,000 went to illegal aliens or other aliens unqualified for admission. Of these, 957,000 were aliens who illegally crossed the border, e.g., entered without inspection. Inexplicably, approximately 1,200 aliens denied asylum, suspected of using fraudulent documents, stowaways or refused at a port of entry got work permits.
- About 1.7 million aliens whose immigration status is unknown, not recorded by the adjudicator or not disclosed by USCIS (the agency responsible for processing applications) also received work permits.
Work permits issued under Obama’s executive action will total 5 million. His shadow work permit program represents another 5.5 million for an aggregate of 10.5 million newly minted workers since 2009 that will compete with 20 million unemployed or underemployed Americans for jobs.
Here’s another way to understand Obama’s indifference to American workers. Under Obama’s anything-goes immigration policy, foreign nationals can come to the U.S. allegedly as tourists to visit Disneyland. When their six month visa expires, they can get a job at Disneyland without the nuisance of formally applying to enter the U.S. as legal immigrants!
