Letter to the Editor RE: A Fix for Immigration
Published on September 16th, 2013
Dear Editor: Regarding the Sept. opinion pieces by Senators McCain and Schumer, because one is a Democrat and the other a Republican, AARP editors must have rationalized to themselves that they are presenting both sides of the story. Responsible journalists would have merged the McCain/Schumer arguments into one op-ed and included a piece by a person who opposes another effort by politicians who are in the pockets of big money to flood the labor market with yet more cheap labor. Sincerely, Ben Zuckerman |
"Senator McCain suggests that border fencing technology could finally seal the border. But Congress undertook to fence the border years ago and never finished the job. Similarly, Senator Schumer suggests a program to check visa visitors out of the country, to make sure they leave. This was enacted even before Sept. 11, 2001, but also never completed. What happens is that after public focus moves away from the immigration issue, Congress stops appropriating money to finish the job. It works like the current proposals from Republicans in the House of Representatives to stop funding Obamacare. Although both Senators cite the CBO study, neither discloses the study predicts that all of the proposed countermeasures against illegal immigration would only achieve a 25% reduction. AARP members can recall the immigration amnesty of 1986, which was touted as a one-time only event, to be followed by strict enforcementm of laws against hiring illegal immigrants. We know those laws were not enforced and there are now more illegal immigrants than before. Why would anyone buy a used amnesty from these politicians?" Ken Pasternack |
