May is “Population Awareness Month,” presenting an opportunity for print and broadcast media to make their readers, listeners, and viewers aware of the destructive effects of unfettered population growth in the world, in America, in California, and in Contra Costa County.
Al Gore concluded his movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” by saying, “We are witnessing a collision between our civilization and the earth. There are three factors that are causing this collision and the first of these is population.”
Mr. Gore is to be commended for citing population (growth) as the earth’s (and America’s) number one cause of environmental degradation. It is unfortunate that he failed to explain how to end human population growth on earth–have approximately two children per woman–or in the U.S.–have approximately two children per woman and approximately one-quarter million inward migrants per year.
Pew Research estimates a U.S. population of 458 million by the year 2050. It would be helpful if our media could explain how to avoid 50% more vehicles on our highways, 50% more pupils in our schools, 50% more patients in our hospitals, 50% more water and energy users, and so on.
Cordially,
