California Assemblyman’s Valiant Anti-Sanctuary Bill Fails

Published on April 28th, 2017

In a bold, trend-defying but mostly symbolic move, California Assemblyman Travis Allen, a Huntington Beach Republican, introduced a bill to counter SB 54, the legislation that would officially make the state an illegal alien sanctuary. The Public Safety Committee instantly defeated Allen’s AB 1252 along party lines.

AB 1252 would have done three things: first, stop state funds from going to any jurisdiction that either claims sanctuary status or has existing sanctuary policies; second, mandate state law enforcement to cooperate directly with federal immigration officials, third, prohibit the use of tax money to defend criminal aliens, the L.A. Justice Fund, the ne plus ultra insult to the state’s taxpayers.

Granny not an ICE target, but Kate-killer Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez should have been.

Facts Allen cited to support AB 1252’s importance included statistics from a 2015 ICE report which showed that illegal immigrants commit 37 percent of federal offenses, 60 percent of which are drug-related and 20 percent kidnapping. In California, illegal immigrants comprise more than 12 percent of the state’s prison population. Yet in violation of federal law, the California prison system releases about 650 criminal illegal immigrants every month.

Allen reminded the committee that his bill isn’t aimed at deporting “someone’s grandmother sitting at home,” but rather removing “child abusers, drug abusers, stalkers, people guilty of sexual battery,” in other words, “serious, serious criminals.” Allen’s testimony included a reference to the murder of Kate Steinle in San Francisco. Family members of other victims also testified. But in the end, the Public Safety Commission proved that it should be renamed. Measures to provide true public safety were defeated, 5-2.

If passed, the bill would bar state and local law enforcement agencies from investigating immigration violations or inquiring about a person’s immigration status. Public schools, hospitals and courthouses would become ICE “no-go” zones. As Senate leader Kevin de Leon bragged, SB 54, the California Values Act, would “freeze out ICE.”
