‘Gotaways’ at Southern Border Hit New Record in November, Crisis Rages On

Published on December 8th, 2022

“Gotaways” at the southern border hit a new record in November, as it’s estimated 73K+ people illegally entered the country undetected. This is the highest number ever recorded, and is a bad sign for border enforcement officials as we head into 2023.

A recent Fox News report on the topic  breaks down the details.

“The number of gotaways for November means that there are already over 137,000 gotaways so far this fiscal year, which began in October. In FY2022 there were nearly 600,000 gotaways. There were 389,155 gotaways at the border in FY2021. The November numbers means that there have been an average of at least 2,400 people evading Border Patrol every day.”

After a record breaking October, we’re still waiting for the full release of November’s border numbers. The Fox report indicated that initial reports show it will break 207K encounters, which would be the ninth month in a row this year that has happened.

Due to the elimination of Title 42 as a tool that can be used to deport illegal aliens at the end of December, we can only imagine November’s border numbers will also be extremely high. The policy officially ends at midnight on 12/21/22.

The elimination of this policy will only incentivize those attempting to cross the border. We’re not alone in thinking this, as an extensive report in NBC News echoes the same concern.

“CBP agents and officers are now apprehending migrants 7,500 to 8,000 times a day, the sources familiar with the data said, which is at or close to the record levels before Venezuelans became subject to Title 42. The sources said estimates of the extra number of migrants who might cross daily when Title 42 ends approach 2,500, meaning daily apprehension totals might hit 10,000.”

According to the NBC report, despite the volatility and escalation of the border crisis, the Biden administration seems unconcerned.

“Two sources familiar with internal discussions at the Department of Homeland Security and the White House said that while many ideas have been considered to combat what could be an even bigger surge in border traffic, there is no “serious planning” around any idea to limit asylum-seekers from coming into the U.S.”

There’s shoving your head in the sand and ignoring a problem, and then there’s this. We’re in the midst of a record breaking border crisis that’s set to only get worse due to the elimination of an enforcement policy.

Instead of taking action to relieve the pressure, our government officials instead are ignoring it. This is a recipe for an even worse crisis than what we’ve seen so far in 2022. We keep saying it, but the current trajectory we’re on means things will only get worse at the border before they get better.
